£10,000 box of Pokémon cards saved from the bin

Christmas came early for one customer of Harper Field Auctioneers when they brought a TCG sealed Pokémon Base Set Booster Box to one of our open valuation days. The vendor didn’t know what to do with the box, or even if they should just throw it away, but specialist valuer Kris Ryan knew what they were the moment the vendor put them in front of him, due to his extensive knowledge of this up and coming collecting field. Kris commented ‘It’s not something you get to see every day and is likely to be one of only a handful of sets ever to be offered for auction’.

The unwanted box was actually a Wizards of the Coast 1999-2000 4th edition set containing 36 packs of cards, and is one of the rarest examples due to a much lower print run than some of the earlier ‘Unlimited’ editions. When originally purchased new the box would have cost around £100, which was not a bad investment -  the value today is closer to £10,000

The set is due to be sold in the next specialist toy auction at Harper Field in April, alongside hundreds of other lots of Pokémon cards, vintage video games, diecast vehicles, model railway items, dolls, bears and much more.
